Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) & GIS Utility Mapping
Project Overview
SoftDig delivered comprehensive Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and GIS Utility Mapping services at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, supporting ongoing design, renovation, and coordination efforts within a fully operational Major League Baseball venue.
Working within an active, high-profile sports and entertainment environment required meticulous planning, stakeholder coordination, and strict adherence to site protocols. The project demanded precise underground utility designation in areas with custom hardscape finishes, architectural treatments, and continuous public access.
To meet these constraints, SoftDig implemented non-invasive locating methods and surface-sensitive marking techniques to accurately identify subsurface infrastructure while preserving finished materials and minimizing visual and operational disruption. The result was a reliable, GIS-integrated utility dataset that supported design decision-making while maintaining the integrity of a nationally recognized facility.
Project Environment
Citizens Bank Park is a nationally recognized professional sports venue with continuous public access, custom hardscape finishes, and complex underground utility networks.
Work within the stadium footprint required:
- Preservation of finished pavers and specialty surfaces
- Minimal visual impact to public areas
- Compliance with venue safety protocols
- Accurate subsurface data in a congested underground environment
Scope of Services
Utility Designation
SoftDig performed utility designation using advanced electromagnetic and geophysical locating methods. Chalk-based markings were utilized in lieu of traditional paint to protect finished surfaces while maintaining clear field identification for design teams.
Field Data Metrics:
- 72 Utility Features
- 2,390.27 Linear Feet of Linework
GIS Mapping & Data Integration
All field-collected utility data was integrated into a structured GIS framework, creating a centralized geospatial dataset to support design coordination, risk reduction during construction, and long-term asset reference.
Results & Deliverables
- Reduced risk of utility conflicts in a dense underground environment
- Accurate mapping within a high-profile operational sports venue
- Non-invasive surface marking approach preserving custom finishes
- GIS-integrated deliverables supporting design and construction coordination
